A common mistake, or question, is when is the character ‘O’ actually an O, and when is it a zero?

It is really important to be able to distinguish between the numerical ‘0’ and the letter ‘O’. Those who aren’t familiar with this concept get confused by it. (more…)

What are the students really writing in their exams?

A new book, F in exams: the best test paper blunders give some great examples of exam answers from the most clueless – and inventive – of students.

Some are very nearly right (Q: “What happens to your body when taking a breath? A: Your chest gets bigger”), but others are very wrong indeed (Q: “Is the moon or the sun more important? A: The moon gives us sight at night when we need it. The sun only provides light in the day when we don’t. Therefore the moon is more important”).

Laugh out loud, but feel free to for the state of education! (more…)
