Save the world with me

World Community GridWe live in a world where much needs to be solved and done. For just over a year and half now I have working with an organisation called The World Community Grid. theopenworld.com (parent business of thetechangel.com) has become a partner of World Community Grid, joining the IBM Corporation and a group of more than 150 companies, associations, foundations and academic institutions. theopenworld.com is encouraging its users, customers and business associates to contribute their idle PC time to assist humanitarian research by joining World Community Grid at worldcommunitygrid.org.

World Community Grid ScreenshotThe big idea is to make the most of your computer, but not in the way you might expect. The way this works is so simple: download and install a free, small software program for your computer, or computers if you have more than one. When idle, your computers request data from World Community Grid’s server. Computers then perform calculations using this data, send the results back to the server and prompt it for a new piece of work. This project depends on individuals – like you – collectively contributing their unused computer time to this non-profit endeavour.

Millions of personal computers sit idly on desks and in homes worldwide. During this idle time, the mysteries of science and space continue to elude us. What if each of the world’s estimated 700 million PCs could be linked to focus on humanity’s most pressing issues?

At the time of writing this, theopenworld.com team has contributed over 7 years, 100 days, 12 hours, 46 minutes, and 17 seconds worth of data – all that has been achieved in the last 515 days, or just over a year and half.
