Flash 10c Fix

An age old problem has resurfaced for Player users this week.

Adobe released an update to its infamous flash player (version 10.c) and as a result some users have found that their favourite sites such as YouTube, BBC iPlayer and masses more are now saying to them that Flash isn’t installed, click here to [blah, blah, blah].

This problem has happened before, and in the past I have spent many an hour trying to it for users the world over. Fortunately on those occasions I did get to the bottom of it, and I am happy to say that I think I have again (comment below with a yea or nay).

This time, it’s relatively easy:

Step 1: Close your browser

Step 2: navigate your way to this folder: Computer > C: Drive > Windows > System32 > Macromed > Flash

Step  3: Right-click over the red icon labeled Flashutil10c and from the menu choose “Run as administrator” (for those reading this in the it may be called Flashutil10d, Flashutil10e, Flashutil10x … etc)

Step 4: A Flash branded window will open and at the bottom of it choose “Install now”.

Step 5: Once installed try a flash video of your choosing.

I have Windows XP, IE 8, and am having this problem ! Again ! Yes, it happened about a year and a half ago LOL And of course I did not record what fixed it that time…but believe it was an IE update.
Tried everything I felt comfortable with this time, did not mess with the registry as some suggest. Have uninstalled, installed, etc…This solution described here did not work for me either.

Any more help would be MUCH appreciated !

    thanks
    Darla

Why doesn’t Adobe fix this problem?

I have windows xp pro, ie7, and this fix did not work for me.
I did not have problems when I downloaded flash the first time (sometime in the last 6 months), only when I went to the update 10c.

I saw this comment on the prior post:
“I eventually sorted it in ie 8 by going to tools > Manage Add-ons > add on types toolbars and extensions and enabling shockwave flash object.”

that worked for me! Every time I had installed, it said it was finished but then flash would not work.

    To the Editor
I’ve tried this fix and all your others but I’m still stuck with the flashutil10b.exe folder inside macromed. I’ve done everything imaginable thats been mentioned all over the web and I still cannot delete that file. I’ve dragged it to the desktop, renamed it, etc.

You mentioned in another fix that as long as there’s a Flash folder in the Macromed file the uninstall is not complete. No matter how many times i change the owner or how many rights I give it I still get the same message when I try to remove the read-only attribute: An error occurred applying attributes to the file….access is denied…
This along with the fact that it needs MY PERMISSION yet all it does is tell me to TRY AGAIN when i right-click to delete it has driven me to the point where i just want to give this pc away and jump to a mac.

My pc is 32bit and runs on vista home premium. I dont understand why I can’t just delete something from my own computer. thanks for any new help you may have!

Also, what started this whole mess was a dialogue box that popped up a few times a day while i was in IE that stated a problem with flash10c.ocx. This would make IE stop working and I’d have to reconnect. Video playback was never an issue though, everything I clicked on would play with very little common problems.

have read almost all the fixes, problems, etc…. have run or tried most of them but still have an issue…. Running vista 32 ulitimate, ie 8, all updates done, etc. My issue is that adobe flash keeps wanting to install everytime I start ie8, or, if started, when I change pages. I let it install.. get the popup windows, my security software shows 3 tmp files for which I give permission to run.. then a quick popup windown I can’t read.. and all is fine, till I close-reopen ie8. Flash programs seem to work fine (I can see the dog on skateboard vid), but its a pain in the a.. er posterior to have to go thru this setup every time. The one thing I didn’t try was to remove silverlight. This problem never existed prior to upgrading to ie8. As usual, Microsoft has left all of us end users to be their unpaid beta testers and software troubleshooters. Thanks to all of you for posting fixes…

I never had a problem with IE and Flash until upgrading to Windows 7 and IE 8. I tried both your initial Flash 10 fix and this Flash 10c fix, and it still doesn’t work! I can view YouTube videos etc. in FireFox, but not in IE 8. It’s no wonder to me that FireFox usage is increasing while IE is declining.

thank you! i began having problems a week or so ago after a “critical” windows 7 update. i followed your steps and lo and behold – flash is working again! thanks again!
