Microsoft has now released software updates for Windows as part of this months (first of 2009) Patch Batch Tuesday.
There is only one update available which is considered essential for a majority of users.

All essential Windows Updates will be available from 13th January
The vulnerability is flagged as “critical” for Windows users who have 2000, XP, Server 2003. However, the patch is marked as “moderate” for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
